      NAPS 2008 GRADUATION
    PLANNING INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS

    ACCOMMODATIONS:

Since Newport, Rhode Island is a popular tourist area, you should make hotel/motel reservations well in advance of your intended arrival date. To help make your planning easier, the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) has already made block reservations with special discounted “NAPS Graduation” rates at several of the local area hotels (see enclosed sheet). These rooms have varying price ranges and are available through TAYLOR-MADE Reservations:
www.CityByTheSea.com/NAPS2008 or (800) 847-6820. If you call in your reservation, please let them know you are visiting to attend the NAPS Graduation. TAYLOR-MADE Reservations will be holding the rooms until April 16th, 2008 so please contact them as soon as possible. In addition to the properties blocked, Taylor-Made Reservations also represents over 100 additional lodgings and will assist you in finding the one that suits your needs. Lastly, for military members the Newport Navy Lodge is conveniently located on the base; call (800) 628-9466 for reservations.

    TRANSPORTATION:
If you are planning air travel, the nearest airport is T. F. Green Airport located in Warwick, RI (close to Providence, RI). The next closest major airport is Logan Airport in Boston, MA. All major rental car companies are available at both airports.
    T. F. Green: Newport is about a 35 minute drive from the airport. Directions are as follows: Take I-95 (South) to Route 4 (South) to 138 (East), Crossing the Jamestown and Newport Bridges which lead right into Newport.(Note: The Newport Bridge has a Toll fee of $2.00 each way) For $20.00/person, the “Newport Shuttle” will transport you from the airport directly to the base or other locations in Newport. For shuttle information and reservations call “Cozy Cab” at (401) 846-2500 or (800) 846-1502 or visit their website: www.cozytrans.com
Logan Airport: Located in the heart of Boston, Logan Airport is approximately an hour and a half drive from Newport. Directions are as follows: Take I-93 (South) to Route 24 (South) follow this all the way down till it ends and turns into Route 114 (South) this will take you right into Newport. Follow signs to the Naval War College to go directly to the base.

    CLIMATE/ATTIRE:
New England weather in general is very unpredictable and changes often. Newport weather in May is usually moderate to cool, with temperatures ranging from 60’s to high 70’s during the day and in the mid 50’s at night. Rain and wind are not uncommon during this time of year. A windbreaker and maybe even raincoat are suggested and layered clothing is highly recommended for your upcoming visit. Also on Thursday, 15 May 2008, we will be hosting the NAPS Graduation Ball / Reception. Attire should be Formal to Semi-Formal, (i.e. Suit/tie and long dress). Our military members will be in Service Dress Whites with medals.

    LOCAL ATTRACTIONS:
Newport has many activities to offer during your visit for the Graduation Ceremony. Besides many quaint gift shops and restaurants, Newport is well-known for its beautiful Mansions and many are open for public tours. Most Mansions are located on Bellevue Avenue, The Breakers and Rosecliff houses are the most popular choices - Admission to see 2 mansions is approx. $23.00. Thames Street is perhaps Newport’s busiest and most interesting area in the evenings, this cobblestone drive has dozens of restaurants, bistros and interesting shops. For details and price ranges on local restaurants, shops and events, the Newport Visitors Center is located on America’s Cup Drive right by the Bus Station. It might be a good idea to stop there early on during your visit and plan a few things for the free-time you have with your son or daughter. You can also call the Newport Chamber of Commerce at (401) 847-1600 or online at www.newportchamber.com.
Newport is a popular tourist area especially during the changing of seasons, Public Parking (off the street) in Downtown Newport is quite scarce and you should anticipate using one of the many pay parking lots at which you can expect to pay about $10.00 for 3-4 hours.
