Here's email from CDR Mike Franklin - CO of CHURCHILL - with some ship commissioning info:

Hello Everyone:

I would like to extend a blanket invitation to the Class of '81 for our commissioning on 10 March 2001 in Norfolk, VA (Townpoint Park). Specifics regarding the vents can soon be found on our Web site. If I know ahead of time, I'll reserve a section for your rowdy crowd.

You will be receiving a list of discounted hotels, car rental agencies, and airlines within the formal invite when they are mailed in January.  This email is intended to remind you of WINSTON S. CHURCHILL's commissioning and give you an early opportunity to reserve a place to stay, make car reservations, etc.  Use Explorer to open the attachment.

Thank you and see you in March,

(University of Nebraska '81), 207-442-5400

At the class meeting of this year's Homecoming the following decision was made (as was included in the latest Shipmate):

"We've decided to assist the commissioning crew of DDG-81, Winston Churchill by sponsoring a donation of $1,981 to their Recreation Fund and contributing to their official ship's painting. We need to raise $5K-$6K using no Class funds to do the job. We're asking for classmates to commit at least $81 to the cause. At that rate, we need 60+ people to donate. For now, send the money "Restricted Use" to the Class for the purpose of the DDG-81 Fund Drive. A plaque with the Class name will be engraved for the painting."

CDR Mike Franklin is the Commanding Officer of CHURCHILL and is an '81 grad from University of Nebraska. When approached with this idea he was thrilled that we would consider it - he sent the class a signed copy (1 of 500) of the picture that will be hung in the wardroom. He has also extended an invite to all '81ers to the commissioning currently sked for March 2001 – I will send more details in a later email.

Donations should be sent to the Alumni Association designating "restricted use". Please spread the word as the more means of communication the better.

On a more personal note - I am stationed in Madrid, Spain and will be here until June 2003. If you ever head over this way please give me a call.

Happy holidays,
