Shipmate Nov 2009

NOTE:  The contents of this page will consist of all the news items for the class that don't fit into SHIPMATE due to the imposed limitations of 2,000 words (including the words charged for photos) for each class news column.    The column will add the material for the succeeding issues of the magazine as they are mailed.  At certain points, old news will be deleted to insure the page doesn't become overly long.  The photos on this page may be clicked upon to enlarge them, so that you may see who is actually in the photo, a better arrangement than the "tiny photo" policy being utilized in the magazine.  So on to what was to have been in SHIPMATE!

USNA ’58 Luau on Oahu

On November 27th, the day before Navy played the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium, the USNA ‘58ers living in Hawaii hosted a luau for our visiting classmates at Tom Jacobs’s home on the North Shore of Oahu.  Thirty classmates and wives (including Earle Smith, ’57, who agreed to shed a year and become an honorary member of our class) feasted on kalua pig and chicken long rice, swapped lies over beer and wine, and had a hell of a good time in general.  Bobbi Hasegawa, Frank’s wife, came with her usual carload of the most delicious pupus (hors d’oeuvres) this side of paradise.  The final football score next day was a bummer, but the party was a gas!

A Note From Earl Farney

It’s very sobering as we reflect upon the productive lives of our many deceased classmates.  Yet, we take great pride in what they did, and the number of people that they positively touched.    .    .    .  fond memories linger on and on.   Especially, now in the Fall of the year, as we approach Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year,  their great contributions toward maintaining our wonderful American freedoms become more brilliant and highlighted in our minds.  God Bless them, their friends, families, and loved ones.

I am privileged to continue my work in uniform, teaching high school ROTC cadets, now in my 24th year of a ‘second career,’ and honored by Air Force Headquarters at Maxwell AFB as the “most senior” JROTC officer/instructor in the business.  Recently, our cadet group had its 3-year Inspector General Unit Evaluation by a Headquarters rep from Phoenix, Arizona.  He checks high schools in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii, Okinawa, and Korea.  Our report noted that we exceeded all standards, had no errors, and were on track again to win the coveted “Distinguished Unit with Merit Award” in May, 2010.  Kids, at times, can be a big challenge, but their dedication, hard work, and allegiance can also be so very rewarding.

Farney Yearbook.jpg (339104 bytes)
Over 20 of our unit graduates are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan --- others in various locations around the globe ---- many are flying aircraft and manning missile silos.  Former students are also in senior ROTC, and at the various service academies

Buff and Jean Walter Report On Their European Cruise  Nov 2009

Jean & I plus our West Point class of 58 friends the Puschecks just returned from a couple of weeks in Europe. We took in a seven day cruise of the new MSC line ship Splendida. It was a very large new ship and we were able to get adjoining cabins with balconies. We ate too much since it is hard to resist the wonderful fair on board an Italian ship. We visited Barcelona, Tunis, Malta, Messina, Rome, Genoa and Marseille. Seeing Carthage was really to take one back a few centuries. I didn't take the flag to that stop but I should have so I settled on one that I'm sure many of the class have been.Walter Rome.JPG (63429 bytes)

Having been to Rome many times in the past we concentrated on The Forum and Coliseum and of course you can see it in the Picture. Our grandkids in Nancy, France were on school holiday so we were able to enjoy a week with them as well celebrating Halloween with them.

Annapolis  '58 - Special Dinner  Oct 2009

Our Annapolis '58 monthly dinner for October was on the 6th and it was a special one for Peggy Kimbo. In case many of you are not familiar with Peggy, she was inducted as an Honorary Member of our class some fifteen years ago. She started working at The Little Campus Inn in 1957 and became a favorite of many of us. When the Little Campus was bought and changed to the Irish Galway Bay Restaurant, Peggy was continued as the Hostess. She took care of making sure all was set up for our monthly dinner, including the small '58 flags on our tables.

Due to Peggy's health she has been unable to come to Galway Bay for several months. At the urging of Fintan Galway, owner of the restaurant, we had a dinner in her honor and her daughter brought her to the the restaurant. We had a group of 30 that came to surprise her and wish her well and had good conversation with her.

Those who attended were: Murray and Teddy Blank, Dick and Mimi Buss, Ken and Polly Mitchell, Jack and Janet (Butterworth) Bouvier, Sandy McMcMillan, Mal O'Donnell, Chuck and Sally Larson, Liles and Beckie Creighton, Jim and Ellen Pierce, Bob and Becky Caldwell, Gordy and Ginny Schaaf, Harlow and Jean Manahan, Myron and Kay Kandra, Jim and Julia Corder, Rupert and Joan MacLean and Walt Mitchell.

It was a very special evening and we all were very happy we could honor Peggy Kimbo in this way.

Submitted by Gary Minar:

L-R are Vern and Fran Hanna, Jim and Betty Higgins and Gary and Barbra Minar.  Note that the book in Gary’s hand was recently found being discarded from a local school library.  As Gary examined the book, he immediately saw Fred Rosenberg’s picture (20th Co.), then at the July 11 USNA picnic we found others that we recognized:  George Greer, Frank Gamboa, John McCain, Jim Higgins, Bill Oliver and maybe Bill Edewaard (all from 17th Co.).  The book is: Annapolis, The Life of a Midshipman, by Jack Engeman, dated 1956, L of C # 56-8517.  It is a fascinating book for us alums, with 250 photos from about ‘54-‘59!  We also found the book real cheap on Amazon.  Also saw Shorty and our favorite super sharp Marine Capt Parsons (19th Co. Officer).

Anyone recognize anyone else?

Chet Nagle Has His Novel, IRAN COVENANT, Published.

Chet Nagle  -From Back Cover Iran Covenant Dust Cover
(See Dust Cover Text Below Chet's write-up

My first novel will be on Amazon.com by 1 January 2009, at last, and the second follows as soon as the editing process is finished. Iran Covenant is the story of a clandestine attack on Israel by Iran – using a smuggled nuclear weapon – ending with non-nuclear strikes by Israel and the United States that destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The plot details how that could be accomplished without putting "boots on the ground." The 306-page novel may be purchased at www.irancovenant.com  for $21.00 (which includes shipping and handling), or directly from me by calling (703) 684-1333, or from Amazon and major online booksellers, after 1 January. (104)

Besides all that, lovely and patient wife Dorothy and I have been tracking our offspring. Oldest son Chad, a lawyer, is teaching and working in Istanbul, second son Christian is writing and teaching in Japan, and daughter Susannah is in her final year at University of Virginia Law School. My plan is to have all that high-priced talent supporting their aging father in the manner befitting a member of the Great Class of ’58. I am not, however, counting on it.

Fiction: Terrorism & Espionage

Naval Academy graduate and Cold War carrier pilot, Chet Nagle
flew in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Then he joined International
Security Affairs as a civilian – leading to defense and intelligence

work in Iran, Oman, and many other countries. Awarded the
Order of Oman in the battle with communist Yemen, he is now a

writer and consultant.

Advance Praise for Iran Covenant

Chet Nagle knows what goes on behind the scenes in Middle East politics and the war
on terror. Iran Covenant is an action-jammed, headline-driven look at reality in the
guise of a spy thriller. Characters are vivid, drama intense, and depiction of a fanatical
Iranian regime all too real. Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn readers will be thrilled.
- Arthur Herman, author NY Times bestseller How the Scots Invented the Modern World.

Iran Covenant: a page-turning tale of counterterrorism, as explosive as today’s
headlines.
W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IV, best-selling authors of Men at War.

Iran’s willingness to use any weapon to defeat the US and Israel is deadly accurate
- more than many Washington insiders will admit. Iran Covenant is an action-filled,
technically accurate novel -- or a scenario on which an intel forecast could be based.
Either way it’s a ripping yarn. Chet Nagle knows covert weapons systems and the men
who run them.
George H. Wittman, columnist for The American Spectator.

Nagle, a new voice in the world of thriller writers, delivers cutting-edge, real-time
action in Iran Covenant. A novel every bit as intriguing as its title.
David Hagberg, best-selling author of Allah’s Scorpion.

Not only does Nagle know what he is talking about, he has lived it. And he can write!
That’s a rare combination.
Tucker Carlson, MSNBC Commentator.
