Shipmate Nov 2009 NOTE: The contents of this page will consist of all the news
items for the class that don't fit into SHIPMATE due to the imposed
limitations of 2,000 words (including the words charged for photos) for each
class news column. The column will add the material for the succeeding issues of the
magazine as they are mailed. At certain points, old news will be deleted
to insure the page doesn't become overly long. The photos on this page may
be clicked upon to enlarge them, so that you may see who is actually in the
photo, a better arrangement than the "tiny photo" policy being utilized
in the magazine. So on to what was to have been in SHIPMATE! ******************************************************************************************** Annapolis
'58 - Special Dinner Oct 2009 Our
Annapolis '58 monthly dinner for October was on the 6th and it was a special one
for Peggy Kimbo. In case many of you are not familiar with Peggy, she was inducted
as an Honorary Member of our class some fifteen years ago. She started working
at The Little Campus Inn in 1957 and became a favorite of many of us. When the
Little Campus was bought and changed to the Irish Galway Bay Restaurant, Peggy
was continued as the Hostess. She took care of making sure all was set up for
our monthly dinner, including the small '58 flags on our tables. Due
to Peggy's health she has been unable to come to Galway Bay for several months.
At the urging of Fintan Galway, owner of the restaurant, we had a dinner in her
honor and her daughter brought her to the the restaurant. We had a group of 30
that came to surprise her and wish her well and had good conversation with her. Those
who attended were: Murray and Teddy Blank, Dick and Mimi Buss, Ken and Polly
Mitchell, Jack and Janet (Butterworth) Bouvier, Sandy McMcMillan, Mal
O'Donnell, Chuck and Sally Larson, Liles and Beckie Creighton, Jim and Ellen
Pierce, Bob and Becky Caldwell, Gordy and Ginny Schaaf, Harlow and Jean Manahan,
Myron and Kay Kandra, Jim and Julia Corder, Rupert and Joan MacLean and Walt
Mitchell. It
was a very special evening and we all were very happy we could honor Peggy Kimbo
in this way. Walt Mitchell
Labor Day Weekend at Mike and Eileen’s Beach house in Nags Head Pictures from the
Santa Barbara USNAAA Submitted by Gary Minar: L-R are Vern and Fran Hanna, Jim and
Betty Higgins and Gary and Barbra Minar. Note that the book in
Gary’s hand was recently found being discarded from a local school
library. As Gary examined the book, he immediately saw Fred
Rosenberg’s picture (20th Co.), then at the July 11 USNA
picnic we found others that we recognized: George Greer, Frank
Gamboa, John McCain, Jim Higgins, Bill Oliver and maybe Bill Edewaard
(all from 17th Co.). The book is: Annapolis, The Life
of a Midshipman, by Jack Engeman, dated 1956, L of C # 56-8517.
It is a fascinating book for us alums, with 250 photos from about
‘54-‘59! We also found the book real cheap on Amazon.
Also saw Shorty and our favorite super sharp Marine Capt Parsons (19th
Co. Officer). Anyone recognize anyone else? ******************************************************************************************** Fred Victor Swears In Grandson On May 29th, Fred Victor administered the Oath of Office for the commissioning of his grandson, 2nd Lt Kelley Victor-Gasper, USMC. The ceremony took place at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial located along the Hudson River in New York City. Kelley graduated from Columbia University on May 23rd with a major in Middle Eastern Studies and reports to Quantico in October. Kelley received his commission via the Marine Corps Platoon Leader's Course.
******************************************************************************************** Buff & Jean Walter’s Trip To Hawaii May 2009 Jean & I decided to spend some time on Kauai at our time share the last week in May and there were so many Photo opportunities that I have had to choose between the best ones. We were delighted with a five hour sunset and dinner cruise on the Napali coast which was great. I was able to see the Kalawlaw trail that my family hiked and camped when we were stationed on Oahu in the mid seventies and I don't think I'd do that today. Then I was able to make a fishing day with a good captain and was blessed with a 45 pound yellow fin tuna which gave us two magnificent dinners thanks to gas grills and cold beer. 58 IS GREAT ******************************************************************************************** 58ers in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas April 2009 John Potter (14) and Kurtz Gilligan (24) have been rallying 58ers in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas for several years. A lunch venue is selected each quarter and on average a dozen classmates show up to enjoy each others' fellowship and generally have a good time. Bill Schramm (17) and Dave Allard (7) offered to sponsor the Spring meeting in Monterey on 25 April 2009. Nine classmates and their guests were able to make the trip. Lunch at a Monterey Canney Row watering hole was followed by a 3-hour personal tour of the famed Monterey Bay Aquarium by Bill Schramm. Bill began his stint as an Aquarium volunteer guide some 10 years ago. Three years ago he persuaded Allard to do likewise and join his "shift". The next 58er gathering will be at The Nantucket in Crockett on Saturday 25 July 2009.

******************************************************************************************** Chet Nagle Has His Novel, IRAN COVENANT, Published.
My first novel will be on Amazon.com by 1 January 2009, at last, and the second follows as soon as the editing process is finished. Iran Covenant is the story of a clandestine attack on Israel by Iran – using a smuggled nuclear weapon – ending with non-nuclear strikes by Israel and the United States that destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The plot details how that could be accomplished without putting "boots on the ground." The 306-page novel may be purchased at www.irancovenant.com for $21.00 (which includes shipping and handling), or directly from me by calling (703) 684-1333, or from Amazon and major online booksellers, after 1 January. (104) Besides all that, lovely and patient wife Dorothy and I have been tracking our offspring. Oldest son Chad, a lawyer, is teaching and working in Istanbul, second son Christian is writing and teaching in Japan, and daughter Susannah is in her final year at University of Virginia Law School. My plan is to have all that high-priced talent supporting their aging father in the manner befitting a member of the Great Class of ’58. I am not, however, counting on it.
