Chet Nagle to Talk on Iran's Nuclear Program From Chet Nagle: I
am scheduled to deliver a luncheon talk at the USNA O Club (I think it
is now called "The Club") on 17 November. The subject is
Iran's nuclear program -- I think you know I wrote a novel on the
subject, IRAN COVENANT, and I did substantial supporting research
on the topic. The
cost for the lunch is $30 for chapter members, $35 for non-members.
Reservations due by 12 November. The schedule for the lunch is: 1115-1145

To Help Take Down The Tailgate Tent (From Rupe MacLean) It
all started when we found ourselves down to just two of us old guys
struggling to do the tailgate take-down in the dark after the
Louisiana Tech game. Gordo
suggested we investigate the use of Boy Scouts. I
followed up on this except that I looked at older, senior scouts (high
school students)-- specifically Sea Scouts. My concept was a
symbiotic, long-term relationship, whereby we would obtain the
services of a dedicated group of strong, young people for our tailgate
evolution and possibly future Midshipmen for USNA and the Sea Scouts
would be provided an opportunity to broaden their horizons by
socializing with our classmates, attending Navy games, and meeting
other members of Navy families as well as Midshipmen.
The
idea came to partial fruition at the AF Game.
Among those take-down volunteers were adult supervisors of Sea
Scout Ship 1009 from Bowie, MD.
Since then, our Class has entered into an arrangement with the
SSS whereby they will be providing us with four scouts at each game to
assist us in the tailgate take-downs and in return we will provide
them with four student (on the hill) game tickets and the full
hospitality of the Class and our tailgate tables.
The first full fledged participation of the scouts and their
supervisors will be at the Wake Forest Game.
The scouts will be easily recognizable by their Sea Scout
shirts and all are encouraged to receive them warmly. Hopefully, some
of these fine young people will go on to become future Midshipmen. Chris and Denise Swenson are the adult supervisors of SSS 1009 and have provided their full support to this effort. You can see some the SSS 1009’s activities on their website www.seascoutship1009.org
Navy -Univ of Hawaii Game - First Notice Dear ‘58ers, Navy will play the University of Hawaii on November 28st, 2009. Travel agencies are already putting together tour packages for the game. So, your Hawaiian shipmates invite USNA ’58 classmates to a beach luau at Tom Jacobs’s house on the North Shore of Oahu on the afternoon and evening of the day before the game, Friday 27 November. We did this the last time Navy played UH, and about 60 people came. The day features the unique beauty of Hawaii’s Pacific shoreline, food, drink, music, and the fascinating sea stories and lies common among old farts. … a 51st reunion, kind of. What have you got to lose? Hoping to see you all. E como mai. With aloha, Jim and Becky

D.C. Area Class Lunches The Class Luncheons are held at the Army Navy Country Club on the last Thursday of every month unless otherwise advised. They start at 1130 and arrangements are made for a speaker to present talks on subjects of interest to the Class. Your class caller should contact you about a week before each event to get a head count. If you do not hear from your caller, contact in the following order: Dave Willingham; mailto: (davew58@aol.com) or ( davew58@comcast.net ), George Jenkins; mailto: (georgejj@aol.com) or (george.jenkins@1958.usna.com ) , or George Coyne; mailto: (gcoyne@aol.com) or (gcoyne@erols.com) If you plan to attend, accurate head counts are important to preclude unnecessary cost. In addition to charging us the full rate for "no-shows", the club also charge us a surcharge for each unannounced attendee. We have no choice but to pass these costs on to the classmates concerned. Please make your reservations as early as possible but no later than the Tuesday before the luncheon. The cost of the luncheon is $25. Honor bar prices will be posted at the event.
SHIPMATE DEADLINES
SHIPMATE will accept digital photos for
publication in class columns. The
only requirements are that the electronic file must be sent as either a JPEG or
TIFF file, the original photo (if scanned) must be larger than 2.5" wide,
and the resolution of the photo must be at least 300 dpi. Hard copy photos are still perfectly acceptable.
Digital photos that don't get used for the class column will probably be
displayed for all to enjoy on the Class of 1958 web site. Have you written
your classmates lately??? Submit your items as they occur to relieve
George Jenkins of the monthly crunch. Adventures, life events, meetings with classmates,
travels, weddings, grandchildren, retirements, Olympic medals, hospitalizations,
and all that are grist for the column. Pictures are appreciated, particularly
with the class flag in them. ISSUE DUE DATE
April 2009 2 Feb 2009 May 5 March June-July 5 May August 4 June Sept 6 July Oct 5 Aug Nov 4 Sept Dec 6 Oct
The class column length has been cut by SHIPMATE from 4,000 words per column to 2,000 words per column. A photo of three or less persons equals 100 words, said words to be subtracted from the column length. And this after the survey showed the class columns to be the most popular feature! Go figure! The address for e-mail to Geroge at george.jenkins@1958.usna.com, and send the photos to him at 713 S Overlook Dr, Alexandria, VA 22305, Tel: 703 683 4357
USNA Vehicle Pass

alumni, who are not eligible to obtain DoD stickers for their cars, can submit
to get a pass which enables them to drive in the Yard.
Knowledge of this may be useful to some classmates, especially for those who
