Wake Forrest Tailgate (From Rupe MacLean)

Every game is a different experience and Wake Forrest certainly kept up that legacy. For those of you who were not at the game, a couple of the highlights:

a. On again, off again sun shine and rain showers punctuated the afternoon and our Sea Scouts joined us for the first time. Class attendance was way down from what we had anticipated and most were washed out before the game ended.

b. Deciding upon prudence over valor with the forbidding weather forecast, we elected to utilize the Sea Scout's service and begin a modified take-down before going up to the game-- taking down the perimeter ropes, pulling the stakes, and dropping the flags.

c. With about three minutes left to go in the second quarter, the heavens burst open with a tropical deluge which continued at various levels of severity long after the game ended.

d. Many, many spectators left at the half. We stacked the tailgate tables out of the way and Paul Polski backed his Lexus in under the tent, turned on his portable generator, mounted three flood lights, opened the car doors wide, tuned his radio to the game, and turned up the volume full blast.

e. After the game as we were loading the tailgate stuff into Bob Caldwell's pick-up truck, a tremendous gust of wind violently yanked the whole east end of the tent up into the air, poles and all, and collapsed the rest of it onto the stragglers huddled under it. As classmates held up the center poles, the valiant Sea Scouts pulled taught the side guy ropes, permitting us tent guys to re-fix the tent pegs and re-attach the side tent poles.

The porta-potty saga was much improved. Wayne McKee even brought in a huge, heavy padlock, but we had to decline-- the porta-potty people require a batch of keys with each lock so their people can service it, etc. We find it much easier to simply use their locks and keys.

Our new late-kick-off procedure appears to be working very well with everyone doing all of their partying before the game.  So, we will repeat it again for the Temple Game-- everyone is requested to please pick up and pack away all of their gear before going up to the stadium to watch the game.

Take-down will commence immediately after the game. At the Wake Forest game we tried another slight twist which worked out very well, a modified take-down. We will repeat it again at the Temple game. As classmates are picking up and packing away their gear before going up to the game, the Sea Scouts will be dismantling the perimeter ropes, pulling the stakes, and dropping the flags. Also, since next week's Notre Dame game is away, the tent will have to come down.

Our Sea Scouts, although soaked to the skin, performed valiantly. Next week, some will be repeats and some will be new faces. The scouts will be easily recognizable by their Sea Scout shirts and all are encouraged to receive them warmly. Hopefully, some of these fine young people will go on to become future Midshipmen.

A novel element has been added this year for the first time, it is also Halloween. Since we border Taylor Avenue, we could be receiving little visitors-- NAAA has asked us to include the above attachment.

Please note that the untangling from the jammed in parking will be taking place after sunset. Everyone is urged to please exercise caution and patience and be on the lookout for little goblins canvassing the residential areas.

Beat Temple!
