The United States Naval and Military Academies have contributed 2,319 graduates to the new U. S. Air Force branch since it separated from the U. S. Army in 1947 and became a separate service on an equal footing with the Army and Navy. The policy, which allowed up to 25% of graduating classes to accept USAF commissions, had its main impact from 1950 through 1959 when the Air Force Academy graduated its first class. The USNA Class of 1955 had no trouble filling the 25% quota.
In honor of the academy graduates who served in the USAF, the September 1998 Shipmate had a feature article.
A survey was conducted to collect information on USNA graduates who entered the USAF after graduation. The survey is up to date as of February 2005 except for mailing addresses. These local USNA55 Web Site pages should be of interest to all classmates whether USN, USMC or USAF.
