55 SHIPMATE COLUMN - October '00
By the time you read this, our 45th Reunion celebration should be close at
hand. Early returns indicate that there will be a large attendance this
year. Hopefully it will be a memorable event for everyone. For
those of you coming, who are still not sure what to do on Saturday night, there
will be at least two "all classmates welcome" parties. Fred Schoenberger
is putting together what he calls a "Creek Crawl" and Charley Plumly has
reserved the Officer & Faculty Club for a dinner party that night.
Details will be posted in the hospitality suite, but you are encouraged to
contact Fred or Charley in advance at (301) 286-0457 or (757) 481-5573,
respectively.
From Denny Sullivan, our Prez:
During the summer, we formed a committee to review possibilities for a permanent gift to the Academy to mark the 50th anniversary of our graduation - to be presented during our 50th reunion. Based on a survey done by Jack Baldwin, all viable options will be presented at our class meeting during the 45th. At the meeting, a choice will be made and we will begin a 5 year fund drive to conclude before our 50th reunion.
Along the lines of fundraising, soon we will receive a letter from the Naval
Academy Foundation requesting a contribution to the Annual Fund.
Contributions will be used to meet various Academy needs and to support the
operations of your Alumni Association. By annotating your check, your
contribution can be earmarked for support of the Soccer Facility, for our Class
fund (Account #7055), or for any other purpose.
It is important to understand that the Alumni Association is no longer in the fundraising business. At the beginning of this year, the Naval Academy Foundation assumed all responsibilities for raising funds for the Naval Academy and for the Alumni Association. The Foundation was chartered in 1944 to raise funds for and to support Naval Academy athletic programs. Over the years, its mission was expanded to include other programs. But on January 1, 2000, the mission was changed to encompass all organizations soliciting support on behalf of the Academy and the Alumni Association. The Foundation is the only fund raiser for all Academy organizations and as such distributes money to athletic programs, other Academy programs, as requested by the Superintendent, and to the Alumni Association. (This is more fully explained on page 52 of the July/August issue of Shipmate)
The Class plans to run a bus from the Washington area to and from the Army-Navy game in Baltimore on Saturday, December 2nd.. Details are still being worked out, but if you are not in receipt of Washington area fliers and need more information call Denny Sullivan at (703) 683-0733.
BEAT ARMY!
TAPS It is with sadness that I pass on notification from Helge Lamb that her husband, and our Classmate, Leroy A. Lamb died on 12/05/99 in Las Vegas NV. Also, our condolences go out to George Atkins who lost his wife June on 07/19/00 after an extended illness.
POTPOURRI. In June, Bill Kennington, John Ganey, Tom Kiefaber
and Denny Sullivan set sail on Bill's 37 footer from Annapolis (actually from
Bill's place in Crownsville) on an overnight cruise to St Michael's on the
Eastern Shore. This has gotten to be an annual event with slight changes
in port calls and crew list each year. This year's trip was fun and
relaxing (except for Tom's head getting in the way of a swinging boom!). (PHOTO
#5, "Ganey at the helm"; PHOTO #6, "Breakfast in St Michael's"; PHOTO #7,
"Bandaged noggin!") The '55 Class Golf Classic in July featured: Hank
& Lucy Mustin, Dick Morgan, Hartley Holte, Tony Bracken, Don Kellerman, Norm
Harper, Cal Weaver and Denny Sullivan. Highlights were: Hank Mustin made
an eagle of #15 and Cal Weaver made par on #8. (PHOTO #8, "Some of the golf
crowd") Gordon
Guimond's account of his trip to Alaska on the '55
Listserv was a real humdinger. I would like to have put it in this column,
but it was just too
long, and editing/shortening would not have done it
justice.
