'55 SHIPMATE COLUMN - NOVEMBER '98

'55 SHIPMATE COLUMN for November '98

Another of Otto & Peggy's fabulous trips is described as follows:

Peggy and I just returned from a great trip to Germany, with an excursion
into Holland along the Rhine River.  We spent a week on a friend's barge,
moving down the Rhine from Cologne, Germany to Nijmegen, Holland.
This was followed by one week in a condo just up the Neckar River from
Heidelberg.  Additional time was spent driving and staying along the Rhine.
While in Heidelberg we managed to spend some time with the Zipf scholar
from the Class of '98.  She is 2nd Lt. Shannon Jo Massie, USMCR, shown
in the picture with Peggy and me at dinner in Heidelberg. (PHOTO #1,
"Sponsor and Scholar")  Another picture shows a part of the famous
Heidelberg castle ruins in the background. (PHOTO #2, "Zipfs in
Heidelberg")    Finally, we are shown enjoying a summer fest at a quiet
corner table away from the real crowd and loud music. (PHOTO #3, "Zipfs
in Nijmegen")

It's sad to report the death on July 20th of Classmate, Douglas Worth (04).  After a short
illness, Doug passed away at home in Darien CT with his wife Toni and his children Lisa
and David by his side.

POTPOURRI.  Received some photos from the Wes Saunders' party in July.  As should
be noted, we were all having much fun. (PHOTOS #4, "Dipping at the Saunders"; #5,
"Ray Medeiros & his son with Wes Saunders"; #6, "Bob Fountain & Bill Kennington";
#7, "Gary Snyder, Don Kellerman & Tom Kiefaber")

Peg & Bill Welch (01) and Ginny & Don Conner (08) represented '55 on a recent USNAAA
Scandinavian cruise. (PHOTO #8, "The Welchs & the Conners on cruise")

Josten's, our ring supplier, will correct the problem of "Ring Shrink" free of charge.  All you
have to do is ship your ring, properly insured, to Warranty Services POB 860 Owatonna, MN
55060 along with a letter giving your name, address, phone number, and the ring size you
want your ring adjusted to, along with any other repairs you desire.  Jim Carr (16) sent his
ring off in early August, and received it back in about three weeks.  He is very pleased with
the service.

Congratulations to Lynne & Ned Floyd (18) for going the extra mile in organizing Class
activities in the San Diego area.

45th Class Reunion

Conceptual planning for the 45th Reunion has begun. Dates are October 18-22, 2000 and the Saturday football game is with Rutgers. We have over 100 rooms reserved at the Annapolis Marriott which is on the waterfront within walking distance of the Yard. We also have additional rooms reserved at the Days Inn on Route 50 (same as for the 40th). We still have a long way to go - if you have any ideas, put them on our Listserv or call me at (703) 759-7743 or another Washington area Classmate.
