A gathering of the Tar Heel contingent took place in late May at Pat and Paul Sutherland's home in Southern Shores at the Outer Banks. On the next page clockwise from the top are Dan Shields (16), Joe Walter (7), Paul Sutherland (7), and Don Loosely (7). Dan, Joe, and Paul live in Southern Shores and Don was visiting from Southport. Later, at dinner at the local country club, they talked to the club manager, who happens to be Classmate Pat Taylor's son.

Further regarding the Outer Banks—a '55 Joint OBX/Tidewater luncheon, magnificently arranged by Pat and Paul Sutherland, was held at Swan Cove in Duck on 10 September, in the teeth of Tropical Storm Gustav! A great turnout included: Don Aven, Marleen and Carl Braun, Mimi and Harvey Burden, Shirley and John Camp, Bumpsie and Ace Davis, Gwen Farino, Tony Hastoglis, Ursula and Tom Kiefaber, Donna and Don Loosley, Ann and Jerry Nay, Roy Paul, Bill Rentz, Joanne and John Roberts, Ann and Wes Saunders, Dell and Charlie Senn, Lynn and Dan Shields, "BJ" Straub, Dolly Streit, Pat and Paul Sutherland, Karen and Pat Taylor, Lotte and Lee Turner, and Genie and Joe Walter. The Walter's hosted an "all hands" soiree at their Southern Shores home that evening. Attending '55ers refused to buckle under to Gustav!

The '55 clan in Southern California celebrated VJ Day on 14 August with a luau at the Jamaica Village Clubhouse in Coronado. Attendees included; Donna and Bill Ball, Tom Boucher, Wally Christmas, Lynne and Ned Floyd, Phil and Paul Grozen, Lilia and Jerry Kowalsky, Penny and John Nyquist, Bob Price, Carol Schrader, Tom Shine with Pat Curley, Madeleine and Bud Summers, and Peggy and Hugh Webster.

   A message from Paul Sutherland:

Icarus International is spearheading "A Monument to a Century of Flight" as a part of the 100th anniversary of flight. Construction of the monument, which will be built on a 35-foot hill on a northwest portion of the Aycock Brown Visitor Center in Kitty Hawk, NC, will likely begin in January of next year. It will be dedicated as a part of the celebration in December 2003. Glen Eure, an Outer Banks artist (and Green Beret vet), has designed the monument in collaboration with acclaimed sculptors. It will feature 14 pylons of stainless steel from 10 to 20 feet high. Each will
represent one of the most significant events in the history of aviation. A part of the monument will be a brick courtyard, paved with 6,500 engraved bricks, each with a message from a sponsor. The courtyard will be centered around the pylons. Pat and I have donated two of those bricks ($100 each). One will be dedicated to all aviators in the Class of 1955. I have arranged with Glen Eure, to have a section set aside for any others in our Class that would like to join Pat and me. It is a terrific way to remember the many accomplishments of our Classmates and others who have helped make aviation what it is today. You do not have to be an aviator to join the effort.
