'55 SHIPMATE COLUMN - MAY '99

A cheerful and bright Dark Ages Party was held on 27 February at the Mt.Vernon CC in Alexandria, VA.  Beautifully arranged by Di & Dutch Schultz (24), the following Classmates had an enjoyable time merrymaking and feasting on surf and turf:  Debbie & John Adams (12), Betty & Tom Cann (16), Beryl & Dan Ebert (14) with guest Stephen Orbell (from UK), Spud Flowers (03) & Joy Gauber, Susie Gardner (Geoff Gardner's (13) widow), Betsey & Bob Fountain (06), Ray Hine (20) & Virginia Wyman, Nancy & Bob Hinton (23), Ann & Jerry Holland (09), Nancy & Don Kellerman (07), Ursula & Tom Kiefaber (19), Eileen & Fred Koester (15), Julie & Tom Lapham (20), Mal MacKinnon (14), Lucy & Hank Mustin (12), Anne & Ted Parker (19), Dick Peterson (23), Bernie & Jim Powers (08), Sharon & Kirk Rowe (24), Del & Chuck Senn (07), Marge & Tom Stallman (14), BJ Straub (Ed Straub's (07) widow), Denny Sullivan (13), Pat & Paul Sutherland (07), Fred Tolleson (17), Jean & Darel Westbrook (10), Peggy & Otto Zipf (15), and hosts, Di & Dutch Schultz.  Adhering to our alternate site policy, next year it will be held at the Army-Navy CC, Arlington.

The Class of '55 Tidewater Virginia/North Carolina contingent had a really nice get- together on 10 February. The group has adopted one of Virginia Beach's nicer restaurants, Le Chambourd, much  the same as the Northern Virginia crowd has favored Portofino's up in Arlington. Charlie Plumly's (16) stroke of genius for social functions showed through in the invitation to area classmates in which it was announced, "It's that time again...you don't dare miss this luncheon!" And then added, "Nominations for and Election of new officers for '99 will be dovetailed in with the sea-story/pre-lunch program. If you remember the old days...the guy who missed the meeting usually got elected as wardroom mess treasurer!" While that announcement was a complete sham...it worked!  A crowd of 29 were coaxed out of their winter shells to join together for lunch. The group included:  Pat & Paul Sutherland, along with BJ Straub, their house guest, and Lyn & Dan Shields (16), all up from the Outer Banks of North Carolina; Lauren Johnson (24), who flew his Twin Comanche down from the outskirts of Richmond; Betsey & Bob Fountain, down for the day from Montross on the Northern Neck; and "locals" Sarah & Larry Frost (09), Dolly & Brent Streit (10), Joanne & John Roberts (01), Rhoda & Al Vail (10), Carol & Carl Vogel (08), Pat & Bob Englert (11), Pat & Jack Foran (01), Ross Olson (19), Hank French (13), Sibyl & Charlie Plumly, and Karen & Pat Taylor (16).

Madeleine and Clarence "Bud" Summers (02) have moved back to California after experimenting with life in the Washington DC area for a couple of years.  He writes:

We arrived at Edwards AFB on 2 March.  Could not find a house to rent and finally bought and moved in to a new home on 1 June in the small community of Quartz Hill. Nice place on the edge of the first foothill of the San Gabrial Mountains off of the High Desert.  Only drawbacks are: we are 4 1/2 miles from the San Andrea fault and the down draft from the mountains make for many windy, but warm days.  We are only 44 miles inland from the ocean at Santa Monica Bay.  Our address is: 41363 Myrtle Street, Palmdale, CA 93551, (805) 943-6844, ClaSummers@aol.com.

I am doing my normal Black Magic work at Edwards.  Am working for the Electronic Warfare Directorate in the 412 Test Wing.  My main project is to put together and then validate an integrated test facility to fly various aircraft and air-to-surface missile models through various surface-to-air missile model threats.  I am to set it up using Missile and Space Intelligence Center [MSIC] threat models.  Then I will validate the new system against the models we are currently using.  Then the Navy at Point Mugu will put an ECM pod on our two seat F-16 and we will fly it against the SAM fly- out models on the range.  Depending upon their availability we could use any of the ranges at China Lake, Edwards and Nellis.  The Air Force still takes a dim view of firing real SAMs at their F-16s. Several countries have openly advertised that they would like to sell us some of their systems. They are happy to lease us missile crews for however long we would want them.  Things have changed mightily in the last ten years.

I am also doing some work in supporting simulations used in testing the Miniature Air Launched Decoy [MALD], Joint Strike Fighter [JSF] and B- 1.  Today was spent in writing a proposal to be given to Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) to build and validate an Integrated Simulation for the Joint Air-to-Surface Stand Off Missile [JASSM]. My work information is: 412 TW/EWWS [Symvionics, Inc.], 20 Hoglan Avenue [Bldg 10-20], Edwards AFB, CA 93524-8170, (805) 277- 1785, DSN 277-1785, clarence.summers@edwards.af.mil.

I regret to report the death of our classmate John J. "Jocko" Hootman (24) on 22 February, following a lengthy illness.  Bob Irons (24) expressed the feelings of many Classmates, thusly "...the 24th Company was so blessed by your presence. Your 100% positive outlook, no matter what the circumstance, no matter how badly you might be feeling, was something we will cherish always.  This was evident right up to your last days..."  Condolences to his widow Barbara who can be reached at: 213 Clubview, McMurray, PA 15317; (724) 942-0423.  Jocko leaves four sons and daughter (Mat, Jim, John, Nate and Laura).

MINI-REUNION UPDATE.  In the December column, the makings of a '55 mini- reunion in Hawaii, instigated by Mary Lou & George Stott (17), was reported.  Things are rolling along!  Heading that way, so far (as of late Feb), are:  Mae & John Anderson (10), Jean & Skip Chase (17), Barbara & Will Fisher (17), Lynne & Ned Floyd (18), Jean & Chuck Gray (05), Joyce & John Haynes (09), Sabra & Bill Kennington (07), Roz & Mal MacKinnon, Karen & George Mead (13), Ray Medeiros (03) and Barbara Obinger, Luci & Marsh Slayton (14), Mary Lou & George Stott, Peggy & Otto Zipf, Denny Sullivan, and possibily, Tom Boucher (07), Phyllis & Paul Grozen (07), and Celina & Ed McHale (03).  The football game will be at Aloha Stadium on Saturday, November 20th. It will be a night game unless there is national TV coverage. It is recommended that tickets are obtained through the USNA Athletic Association, as you'll get better seats than what will be available through the University of Hawaii. On Friday evening, November 19th, George has arranged a cocktail party with very heavy pupus (dinner) at Oahu Country Club, a marvelous site overlooking Honolulu. A tail-gate party at Aloha Stadium prior to the game on Saturday is a possibility. On Sunday afternoon/evening, November 21st, Mary Lou and George will host a beach party at our house on Kailua Beach.

'55 LISTSERV.  The following new members of the Listserv are all classmates who entered the USAF upon graduation, and Joe Clarkson (08) has found them through his letter-writing campaign to round up every possible '55er for our 45th Reunion next year: #230- Mort Rubenstein (13), MORTON.J.RUBENSTEIN@cpmx.saic.com; #231- Pin Dyer (21), pindyer@email.msn.com; #232- Ken Holden (18), kenjudy@earthlink.net; #233- Tom State (08), Tom.State@trw.com; #234- Fred Colburn (07), colburn@sac.verio.net; and #235- Tom Drake (18), Drakechato@aol.com.

POTPOURRI.  Congratulation to RADM Malcolm McKinnon, III, USN (Ret) on his election to the National Academy of Engineering in October of last year.  Bravo Zulu, Mal!  Otto Zipf attended the commissioning of the USS DONALD COOK (DDG-75) in Philadelphia on 4 December.  He is pictured with his older brother Bill, an old WWII destroyerman (PHOTO #1, "Otto & Bill Zipf").  The '55 Washington DC Golf Schedule for this year hasn't been firmed up yet, but we do know the May event will be held on 18th at the Army-Navy CC, Arlington.  Call Ray Hine at (703) 860-0691 for details.  Recently, we had the pleasure of attending an All-Beethoven Concert by The Metropolitan Chorus based in Arlington, VA.  They were magnificent and, significantly, Betsey Fountain, alto (Bob Fountain's famous other) performs with them as a soloist.

45th Class Reunion

Conceptual planning for the 45th Reunion: The dates of our 45th Reunion have changed.  It will now take place on October 26-29, 2000, an "off-Homecoming" weekend.  However, nothing else has changed.  We still have booked the waterfront Marriott Hotel in Annapolis as well as the Days Inn on Route 50.  And Washington area Classmates are still planning a great program.  More details will be provided later in Shipmate, via letter, and on the '55 Net. We still have a long way to go - if you have any ideas, put them on our Listserv or call Tom Kiefaber at (703) 759-7743 or another Washington area Classmate.
