The 2000 golf season for the Washington metropolitan area USNA class of 1955
concluded 3 October at Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston Virginia.
Attendees at the evening dinner that followed included Nancy & Don Kellerman,
Lucy & Hank Mustin, Diane & Dutch Schultz, Ray Hine and Virginia Wyman,
Ursula & Tom Kiefaber, Monroe Hatch, Joe Chmelik and son Tom, Denny Sullivan,
Norm Harper (soon to move to PA), Hartley Holte, and Cal Weaver. Awards went
to Tony Bracken, Don Kellerman, Denny Sullivan, Joe Chmelik and Tom Schultz
for hosting golf outings at their respective country clubs over the course of
the season. Denny Sullivan and Hartley Holte presented Ray Hine with several
gifts in appreciation of his many contributions to '55 golf.  Trophies went
to Tony Bracken, in absentia due to a prior commitment, for best golfer
during the 2000 season. Lucy Mustin received a trophy for the most famous
female golfer in the class due to her heroic golfing exploits. Denny Sullivan
received a trophy for most dedicated golfer. Joe Chmelik and Dick Morgan,
also absent, received trophies for the longest drive- as each had to travel
considerable distance to participate in each event. Jim Poole, Class of 1957,
also absent, received a trophy for being the most organized golf coordinator.
Monroe Hatch received the Edward C. Straub Memorial Trophy this year for his
golf excellence and contributions to Class of '55 golf.  During the year we
had many good times hitting the ball at various golf courses. Unfortunately
for the first time, we failed to defend the Class Challenge Golf Trophy in
competition with our annual challengers from the class of 1957. We look
forward to the opportunity next year. Hopefully any classmate returning to
the Washington metro area on the third Tuesday of the summer months will call
to participate during 2001. (PHOTO #1, "Don Kellerman, Denny Sullivan &

Grace & Bob Hammond hosted '55ers in the Southern California area to watch
the TCU game.  Joining Bob and Grace in their lovely San Clemente home were
Lynne & Ned Floyd, Sandy & Chuck Henry, Jim Kelly, Al Koziscek, and Ray
Medeiros with Barbara Obinger.  Except for the score, the party was great.
Bob and Grace were perfect hosts.  Al was the perfect cheerleader. (PHOTO #8,

John Weaver sent in a picture of himself and Dan Akerson (USNA '70) on the
golf course in southwest Ireland after a one-up victory over a fellow Pro/Am
team from the Washington DC area.  Five DC teams vied with five Irish teams.

I deeply regret to inform that our classmate Ronald C. Kucera (10) passed
away on 6 October.  Funeral services were held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church
in Tempe, AZ, followed by graveside services at Holy Redeemer Cemetery &
Mausoleum, Phoenix, AZ. Tom Copeman and Guy Grafius represented the Class and
10th Company as pallbearers for the services.  Our condolences go out to
Alicia and the Kucera family - their son Rick and daughter Anita who both
reside in the Phoenix area. Alicia can be contacted at: 1106 E. Magdalena
Drive, Tempe, AZ  85283-3018, (480) 897-2095. (PHOTO #10, "Ronald C. Kucera")

Steve Lowe is recovering nicely from a recent stroke.  Saw him at the
Navy-TCU game - he was in good spirits but still has difficulty swallowing.
The accompanying picture of Steve was taken at the annual Saunders' shindig
this summer, just prior to the stroke. (PHOTO #11, "Steve Lowe")
