'55 CLASS SHIPMATE COLUMN - April '00
The Distinguished Graduate Award Selection Committee formed by the Chairman
of the Board of Trustees of the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
selected five recipients to receive the Distinguished Graduate Award
for
2000. With a large reservoir of distinguished graduates, the
Committee
chaired by Admiral Carlisle Trost, Class of 1953, and a former Chief
of Naval
Operations, decided to make multiple selections this year. One of the
recipients of the 2000 award is: Major General William A. Anders (22),
USAF
Retired, Class of 1955, former Chairman and CEO of General Dynamics,
former
Astronaut and Mission Commander of Apollo 8, former Chairman of Nuclear
Regulatory Commission, former Ambassador to Norway. Congratulations,
Bill!
Every navy classmate I've talked to, voted for you as our representative,
even though you went USAF.
Honoring a string of Naval Academy graduates ( including our classmate
Hank),
Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig recently named the 39th Arleigh
Burke
class guided missile destroyer MUSTIN, bringing attention to one family's
near century of naval service, from 1896 until 1989.
Ned Floyd (18) sent along some photos taken at Mary Lou & George
Stott's (17)
Beach Party in Hawaii; the San Diego '55 Fall Social; and the San Diego
Army-Navy Game Party at Lavon & Dick Jones's (10) home. (PHOTO

Hartley Holte (13) writes:
I am now checking in from the Annapolis area. Sally and I are moving from
the Hoosier state to a home in the Hillmere section. I am now fully retired,
this time from several environmentally related activities in Indiana, and
look forward to a little golf, tennis, volunteer work and offspring support.
I have enclosed a photo of myself with Bill Slattery (08) and John Raster
(07) at the Notre Dame football game last fall. I believe that was the
entire Indiana contingent! Terrific game, with the margin literally inches.
Looking forward to the 45th! (PHOTO #11, "The Indiana Contingent").
We are planning a party in the Washington DC area for Class submariners
on
the evening of June 14 at the Army-Navy Country Club. This is
the night
before all the meetings and celebrations planned by the Submarine League
to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of submarines. We can also play golf
that
afternoon if there is any interest. Submarine Classmates should
have
received a letter by now from Bill Smith (04), who is President of
the
Submarine League, describing activities associated with the Submarine
Centenial Celebration in June. If you have questions or need more
information, give Bill or Denny a call or use E-mail.
This year we should not receive any phone calls soliciting gifts
for the
Naval Academy Fund; instead, we will get requests by mail. If
you mark the
checks "For the soccer facility" your gift will go to support that
effort.
Remember that Bill Anders is the mover behind that project.
By this time you should have received the first info letter for our
45th
Reunion. If you did not get it, please contact Denny. And
you should
receive a second and final letter in May or June.
For future planning. There will be a 13th Company reunion at Homecoming
in
2001 - for all the '50s classes - 50 through 59. The tentative date
is
October 13, 2001. More on this later.
Tickets are going fast for the Army-Navy football game on December 2nd
at
Baltimore's PSINet Stadium. Order early and ask for tickets in
the '55
section
