First Class Picnic

Commissioning Week 2005

The first-class picnic was held on Forrest Sherman Field (Hospital Point) at the Naval Academy on Tuesday, 24 May 2005. The United States Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation along with the Class of 1955 held the picnic for the parents and families of the Class of 2005.

'55ers attending were: Denny Sullivan, Hartley Holte, Fred & Maude Underwood, Ray Hine & Virginia Wyman, Tom & Ursula Kiefaber, Bill & Bett Lavallee, George Martin, Bill Manthorpe, Kirk & Sharon Rowe, and Joe & Joyce Armstrong

The picnic started at 11:00 under the big white tent and lasted well past 1 p.m. About 1700 midshipmen, parents, family and friends congregated under the big tent to get a bite to eat.

The bounty included hotdogs, chips, fruit and cookies, catered by the Naval Academy’s Officer and Faculty Club. Those attending enjoyed the day even though the day was gray and drizzly.

The Parent Program Coordinator, Jill Montone along with Event Manager, Lyn Looft, organized the picnic this year and had plenty of help from the Alumni Association and Foundation staff and family members. The Class of 1955 helped sponsor this special event; giving them an opportunity to meet up with the midshipmen and their families.

There was an added treat - this year’s picnic coincided with the Blue Angels flight rehearsal. Many people had an opportunity to see two of the six jets practice some maneuvers as they prepared for their formal demonstration on Wednesday, 25 May.
