In the picture to the right above, the men are from left
to right Dean of Engineering Charles Nyguyen , Vice Admiral Paul Gaffney, USN,
Emeritus Professor Frank Andrews, and former Dean of Engineering John
McCoy. The three men in University robes are all members of the faculty at Catholic University
in Washington, DC.
Vice Admiral Gaffney is class of 68 USNA. He came to Catholic
University, school of engineering
immediately upon graduating from the Naval Academy
to obtain a master's degree in Ocean Engineering .Eventually he became a
specialist in ocean engineering.
Over the years he was assigned to such jobs as Commander of the Naval Research
laboratory in Washington DC, head of the Navy's oceanography laboratory in
Bay St. Louis, Oceanographer of the
Navy, Chief of Naval Research, and finally President of the National
Defense University in Washington.
He was awarded an honorary doctorate at Catholic University, because of his
accomplishments in his chosen field of ocean engineering. The University was very proud to make
this award in as much as he was one of the
first graduates in the Naval
Academy’s immediate Masters program. , coming to CUA directly after graduating
from the Naval
Academy. Vice
Admiral Gaffney is now
President of Monmouth College in New
Jersey.
Frank Andrews was his lead professor at Catholic University.
