Dear Alunmi,
Greetings! I hope this newsletter finds you in good
health, humor, and spirt. I'd like to start this
report by announcing a few changes the organization
has made since our last newsletter. First off, I'd
like to thank Jim Phelan '60 for his outstanding
service as Secretary and Treasurer of the Pittsburgh
Chapter. For over 20 years, Jim has kept meticulous
records, promulgated masses of information, and
corresponded with countless people in his various
roles. For his selfless service, above and beyond the
call of duty, we owe him a debt of gratitude.
Next, allow me to introduce some people who have
volunteered for officer positions in the chapter.
Your current officers are:
Bill Otto '71, President
412-856-3500
figaro4105@aol.com
Rick Lee '75, Vice President
412-374-5017
rickhlee@adelphia.net
Kyle Baker '92, Secretary
412-566-6476
Kyle_Baker@nauticom.net
Scott Patterson '94, Treasurer
412-566-6805
Scott_Patterson@ml.com
Please take a moment to thank Rick,
Kyle, and Scott for stepping in to fill these vital
roles. Feel free to communicate with any of us about
the chapter, upcoming events, or how to otherwise get
involved.
Chapter Dues
We last collected dues for the 2000-2001 period, in
which everyone received two years of membership for
the price of one. Quite a deal! The calendar has
rolled over again, though, and it's time for us to
collect for 2002. Please make your check for $10.00
payable to "USNA Alumni Association, Pittsburgh
Chapter" and mail to Scott Patterson, 112
Scenery Circle, McMurray, PA 15317.
Business and Professional Network
The purpose of this group, within the Pittsburgh
Chapter, is to foster business relationships, provide
resources of professional expertise, and enhance the
social opportunities of the Association. Inclusion in
the Business and Professional Network (BPN) is
completely voluntery. Meetings are of a casual
nature, designed to provide a chance for fellow
alumni to gather informally. The events are scheduled
on a bi-monthly basis, with the next meeting to be a
lunch at 11:30 AM on April 10th at Houlihan's in
Station Square. Contact Kyle Baker (see above) for
details and to be placed on the BPN Directory and
e-mail list.
Communications
While this newsletter may be nice to look at, it is
slow to produce, costly to send, and inefficient as a
means of communication. We would much rather keep you
updated via e-mail. This would allow us to allocate
more of the annual dues to funding chapter events
instead of paper supplies and postage. With that in
mind, please keep Kyle updated with your current
e-mail address by sending him a short note at
Kyle_Baker@nauticom.net. If you wouldn't mind
receiving your newsletter as an e-mail attachment
only, please state so in your e-mail.
To further enhance communications, I'm pleased to
announce a dedicated Pittsburgh Chapter website. This
website will be administered locally, and hosted as a
free service of the USNA Alumni Association. We are
looking for a volunteer to take over as webmaster and
keep the site updated. Please contact Kyle if you are
interested. The page can be found at:
http://www.usna.com/Chapters/US/PA/Pittsburgh/default.htm
or by visiting the Alumni Association at
www.usna.com, clicking on "Communities" and
following the links to the Pittsburgh Chapter. This
is the easiest way to find the most up-to-date
information on Chapter membership, events, and news.
You can also find direct e-mail links to your chapter
officers. Visit often to stay current!
Events
It was great to see many of you at the Army / Navy
Football game tailgate party at the Pittsburgh
Athletic Association in December 2001. It was also
great to see others at the Army / Navy Basketball
game party at the Sports Rock Café in Feburary 2002.
Now lets get together for these upcoming events:
Jul 20th: Pittsburgh Army / Navy Interservice
Competition - P.A.N.I.C.
This family picnic will pit USNA Alumni against the
Whoop Alumni in three "athletic" events:
Softball, Volleyball, and Horseshoes. You don't have
to worry, we currently hold the trophy. Come on out
and support your shipmates in keeping it. Even if you
don't play, you can still cheer!
Details to follow
Sep: Pittsburgh Army / Navy Golf Scramble -
P.A.N.G.S.
There's no reason to feel guilty about beating Army
on the golf course. We need all our golfers to make
this inaugural event a success. Bring your
"A" game and let's show the Whoops who
really has the most accurate artillery.
Details to follow.
Dec 7th: Army / Navy Game Special Tailgate -
A.N.G.S.T.
This Pearl Harbor Day, we will avenge last year's
loss. Support Navy Football by turning out for this
year's tailgate party.
Details to follow.
Take care,
Bill Otto '71
