Question 10 on page 20 -- to me that is the most significant finding in view of the "Mission". Either the BOT's got to do a hard sell to members or change emphasis. Nicely done!

Excellent analyses.

Is it not clear from the survey results that for a large majority Shipmate is the Association?

I have done all the data entering you require and still cannot be 'recognized,' so will just have to 'pass' on reading the Member Survey.

Page 23 seems to indicate information which is not explained. What are the two colors of green highlights and the three red "circles" intended to emphasize?

Re: Shipmate magazine. My opinion - With the advent of free social networking sites and the prevelance of wifi, people will discontinue their subscription of Shipmate and will turn to other avenues to keep in touch. You will end up with multiple small factions of people who will stick together with their peers to share information, which will de-centralize the Alumni Association.

What is the opinion of the Board concerning the results of the Member Survey? Satisfied? Results expected or a surprise? Does anything require immediate action? What is meant by the "final report?" Final report from Fleishman & Hillard? Board recommendations on the Survey? When is a report from the Board due on the findings and when is a POA&M planned? David Tuma Life Member

Byron, it appears to me that you got out ahead of the alumni community a little bit (much as I applaud your efforts). The question is, do you take some time to let the troglodytes catch up, or do you forge ahead and accept the significant (perhaps fatal) cost to waiting to go entirely electronic in your communications? Personally, I'll take electronic communications any time. Save a tree on my subscription.

I'm surprised there was only a 25% participation rate. That infers 75% who received the survey either don't care or didn't want to bother responding. That, in and of itself, makes a somewhat meaningful statement, don't you think?

It seems the website is 'challenged'... Please either fix, update or acquire enough bandwidth to operate better. Thanks.

A 25% response rate is quite high for such a survey.

While the presentation and graphics are very professionally done, it seems to me that any plebe could have written this set of "findings" over a normal weekend for a "bull" term paper. There is nothing whatsoever surprising in this survey. Also, nothing very informative or useful. I sincerely hope that it didn't cost very much to gain this very questionable wisdom.

ECT 1954: It is obvious that the hard copy Shipmate is the primary and most effective media of the Alumni Association. With the amount of donations the Association gets each year, it seems that a simple solution is to subsidize Shipmate and keep it at 10 issues a year for at least another 10 or 15 years. Many of the older classes do not use email, the Web, WIFI, etc, and are attuned to the hard copy (or the telephone). KISS - keep it simple, stupid! (respectfully)

Speaker Notes would have helped when reading the presentation. What states are in what regions? On the overall summary slide #23, it would have been useful to see the numbers of members for each of those brackets. Can you re-post the survey questions as I'm sure most of us can't remember back that far? Tough crowd, but thanks for supporting us all.

Do not recall receiving the survey. If enough of us did not then your results may be statistically skewed. It would seem though that a 25% sample should yield good results. I would miss the Shipmate.

Eric Honour '69 - Given these powerful results, it would seem to be absurd to even consider going completely electronic on Shipmate at this time. But it also seems to make sense to foster newer methods for the younger classes that would eventually (15-20 years) take its place.

I hate to say it, but I think the survey was too long. I started to complete it, but put it aside to finish it and when I took it up, it was still a long way from being finished. For me, Shipmate is important - I miss a "Few Inches from the Yard." Perhaps it was hokey and repetitive, but I liked have some contact with current midshipment - in fact, the more of this connection, the better for me.
