United States Naval Academy Class of 1963 Returns for 45th Reunion
Over 330 graduates from the Class of 1963 and their guests gathered 24-27 April for their 45th reunion. Reunion festivities included briefings from the Naval Academy Superintendent and Alumni Association and Foundation President, golf tournament, Class social and tailgate at the Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium for the double header between Navy and Holy Cross.
When the Class of 1963 began their Academy journey with 1,205 midshipmen the Cold War and nuclear build up was in full swing. The 876 midshipmen who received their commission at graduation were uncertain what challenges were waiting for them. However, their Academy years, prepared the Class of 1963 to be confident officers, ready to tackle the Cold War or the challenges in Vietnam. These men, under difficult circumstances, gave their lives to serving their country with integrity, duty and honor. Combat awards include three Navy Crosses, 15 Silver Stars, 21 Purple Hearts and their military careers are distinguished by five Vice Admirals and 15 Rear Admirals. The Class of 1963 is also noted for the service to the U.S. government by serving as Assistant Secretary of Army; Assistant Secretary of Defense Reserve Affairs; ASD Reserve Affairs and anti-Drug Czar in G.H.W. Bush Administration (1987-93); Assistant Secretary of Treasury (1981-83); Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (1998-2001); Ohio Secretary of State; Ohio State Senator.
Since graduating, the Class of 1963 has supported the mission of the Naval Academy through gifts to the Academy including the North Concourse Landing at Alumni Hall; Faculty Development Support; and Scholarship Program for Children of Deceased Classmates, THRESHER/SCORPION Memorial, Academic Center of Excellence and the Levy Center and Jewish Chapel Support. Additionally, valued philanthropic support from donors supported many other USNA strategic priorities: athletics, academics, leadership, ethics and unrestricted. Generous gift support was directed to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Renovation, Terwilliger Brothers Filed at Bishop Stadium Renovation, Navy Crew support and the Fund for Athletic Excellence.
The Class of 1963, has also supported the Alumni Association and donor participation is nearly $1.84 million in Naval Academy Annual Fund commitments which have been documented during the Class Legacy Period (1 Nov 2000- 31 March 2008)!
