247 King George Street: Hall, House, and Home - article about Ogle Hall, Shipmate October 2003
Alumni House, originally known as Ogle Hall, was built in 1739 by Dr. William Stevenson. After Dr. Stevenson's death, his widow remarried and rented this house to Samuel Ogle, Governor of Maryland from 1747-1752. After Governor Ogle's death in 1752, his widow later acquired the property and deeded it to her son Benjamin Ogle.
George Washington dined with Benjamin Ogle on 1 October 1773, which is noted in Washington's diary. In 1776, Ogle decided to remodel his house, which probably included the addition of this ballroom.
Benjamin Ogle served as governor from 1798-1801 and the house passed through different ownership. Finally, in 1944, the Alumni Association & Foundation restored the house. After recovering from a devastating fire in 1971, the Alumni House became the working headquarters for the Alumni Association & Foundation as well as providing a meeting area for alumni and other distinguished visitors.
