24May12 - James Francis (Jim) O'Neil, 89, born September 30, 1922 in Akron, Ohio, died
peacefully on May 18, 2012. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60
years, Mary Helen (nee Mahoney).
Father of 10: Michael (PA, deceased) of Oakton, VA., Brian (Myrna) of Cottage Grove, ORE., the late Robert (passed awayat age seven in Annapolis, Md. in 1957), Kathleen (Joe Incorvaia) of
Riverside, Conn., Marie Flaherty (Kevin) of Madison, Conn., Sally Harvey (Roy)
of Dallas, Texas, Paul (Liz) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Patricia Gagen (Chris) of
Atlanta, Ga., Clare Mangano (Tom) of Lebanon, N.J., and Deirdre McKinnon (Alex)
of Aliso Viejo, Calif. Loving grandfather of 26: Siobhan, James (Margot), Rory,
and Molly O'Neil; Galen (Laura), Jhomer, Dustin, Shane, and Anthony O'Neil;
Moira Martish (Ben), Brendan, and Megan Incorvaia; Patrick, Kate, and Liam
Flaherty; Sean, Connor, and Deirdre Harvey; Katie, Dan, Colleen, and Mary Beth
O'Neil; Brigid, Mary Grace, and Ann Marie Mangano; and Elizabeth Gagen.
Survived by brother, J. Philip (Mary Karen) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and
sisters, Margaret Ann Freer (Harry) of Lyndhurst, Ohio and Patience of
Fairlawn, Ohio. Preceded in death by parents, Augustin and Marie of Akron,
Ohio; brothers, Donal of Bath, Ohio, and Robert of Akron, Ohio; and sisters,
Alice of Bath, Ohio and Mary of Akron, Ohio.
Jim was a graduate of St. Vincent's High School and the U.S. Naval Academy. He
served on the USS Honolulu in the Pacific during World War II and later piloted
P-2 anti-submarine patrol aircraft and taught at the Naval Academy. He also
served as the President of the Navy Federal Credit Union. Upon retirement from
the U.S. Navy, he served as Vice President for Personnel of the General Tire
Rubber Co., retiring in 1984. For many years, he and Mary Helen lived in both
Akron and Adelina, Md., where they hosted many family gatherings and weddings.
James, known to all his family as Big Jim, was a fiercely independent,
unfailingly generous and much loved patriarch. James was a past President of
the Portage Country Club and for many years was a eucharistic minister at St.
Sebastian's Church.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012, at St. Sebastian
Church at 9:30 A.M. located at 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, OH 44320. Interment in
All Saints Cemetery, Northfield. The family will receive friends at Hummel
Funeral Home at 500 E. Exchange Street, Akron, OH 44304 on Wednesday, May 23,
2012 from 4 to 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations
in memory of Jim to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road,
Akron, OH 44333, or St. Sebastian Church, 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, OH 44320.
