Local Bakeries and Pizza Deliveries
Everything has changed since 9-11-01. Entrance
onto base for local business has been curtailed. If you want to order
a birthday cake or surprise them with a pizza delivery...here are some
local businesses. You will need to call them and place your order, but
if your M/C is having a birthday, a freshly baked cake would be a treat.
To use these contacts, you will need to know a NAPSter that can pick your
order up for you. It's alot trickier than it used to be!
Local Bakeries If your M/C is not a
cake fan but might like to have a pizza, try one of these establishments!
In the past, pizzas were picked up at the quarter deck, but with the security
issue of getting on base, it may not be possible anymore. Check with your
NAPSter to see what they are doing for pizza delivery these days.
Other off base pizzerias:
- Pizza Hut (401)846-1470
- Mama Leone's (401)847-7272,
http://www.mamaleones.net
- Checkers Pizza (401)849-8890 Fax # (401)849-8870
- Domino's (401)849-6940
The
Commissary (401) 841-2111
This large grocery store on Base is now your best bet for birthdays and
celebration. You could call them or contact a fellow student and ask them
to order the cake at least 24 hours in advance. Someone with a military
ID (ie: a NAPSter) would need to go to the commissary to pick up the cake
for the big day. The commissary is only a few blocks from NAPS. The costs
are $10.00 for an 8" round, $12.00 for a 1/4 sheet and $20.00 for a 1/2
sheet cake. You need to add 5% to these prices for the surcharge. You
can get gold, chocolate or marble cake, and regular or whipped icing.
The Commissary has proven to be the most convenient and inexpensive way
to order up a birthday party.
Some parents send a check to their NAPSter's
roommate and leave the details up to them. Cakes and decorations arrive
at an appropriate time and everyone has been satisfied with the arrangements.
So, knowing a friendly fellow student or roommate can be a lifesaver for
students and parents alike!
You may also order a gift certificate for
the Commissary by phone at1-877-770-4438.
You can have the gift certificate delivered to your NAPSter, a roommate
or friend. This could cover the cost of the cake and decorations or just
be for whatever the student wants.
Navy Exchange -
The NEX is a department store with clothing, kitchenware, shoes, etc.
No sales tax is charged and the prices are resonable. There is a Blimpie
sub shop inside and a wonderful Navy specialty shop with banners, bumper
stickers, hats and shirts. Because it is on base, students can visit the
NEX during the week if they have a free period.
NEX Online - For ordering all
sorts of things. Navy personel only
To order a NEX gift certificate:
Go to www.aafes.com home page and click
on shopper log in. Here you will be prompted for a username and password.
If you have never logged in before your username is your social security
number and your password is your birth date (YYYYMMDD). Only military
ID holders can login. You may have to login using your student's information
to purchase the gift certificates. The next page you reach is their catalog
page and if you scroll down the left side of the page you will see a picture
of a gift certificate. Simply click on "PURCHASE GIFT CERTIFICATES"
to order gift certificates of different values.
Gifts
from the HomeFront
Send
a "Gifts from the HomeFront" gift certificate to an individual
military family member, friend or loved one. They can use it at any PX/BX
location around the world. This is an option for shopping at the NEX on
base but there is a $4.95 charge per gift certificate.

A word of warning: There is a Motel 6 which
is within walking distance of Gate 1 and it has very reasonable room
rates, but it is directly across the street from the municipal sewage
treatment plant and when the wind is blowing from that direction, the
odor can be overwhelming. Just wanted to let folks know that this might
be an issue for you.
