Dear ’mates: Thanks to JJ Cuff and Al Eaton for two good reports on the Fleet Forces Command Change of Command on 24 JUL 09. Jon Greenert invited the class to the festivities, which took place on board USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75) in Norfolk. Monica and Al Eaton joined a strong contingent of 14th company mates who were happy to see Jon’s continued success. Al writes: Our group included Sue and Mike Cecere, Miriam and Shaw Cohe, Dennis DiAntonio and his friend Elizabeth Herrera, Laurie and Mark Harper, Sandy and Ken Hart, Ruth and Tom Madre, Carolyn and Jack Moore, along with Monica and me. We were part of a larger group from our class – ’75 was well represented! Jon was relieved as Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces by Admiral John Harvey (USNA ’73). Jon’s wife Darleen received a distinguished service award for her outstanding dedication and support to our Navy military and civilians families. BZ Darleen! It was great to see everyone at this mini-reunion and we look forward to our next get-together! We wish Jon, Darleen and their family all the best in Washington, DC, where Jon became the Vice Chief of Naval Operations in mid-August. And turning the keyboard over to JJ (who once again wins the Coveted Scribe’s Award for his excellent and tireless reporting: Sorry you and our other classmates were unable to attend the Change of Command ceremony last Friday, it was a great day for '75! I am also including some shots from the day's festivities. The ship's photographer is going to send a group shot, taken with Jon, but I do not want to wait too long before getting this message off to you. So here is how it went down. At 0949 on 24 July 09, Admiral Jon Greenert ’75 was relieved by Admiral John Harvey ’73 on board the USS TRUMAN (CVN-75), pier side at NOB Norfolk. As Jon turned over the reins to his warfighting command, he prepares to assume his new role as Vice CNO in August 2009. Jon started the ceremony off on a positive note by asking everyone in attendance to sing the National Anthem. As he stood at the lectern, Jon thanked everyone for starting the ceremony off in a great way. He then wanted to show all in attendance just how those on the podium felt with all the flashes going off in the faces. He pulled out a camera and began taking pictures of the audience. Jon next took a moment to acknowledge his classmates in attendance, which received applause from audience. His company, the 14th - "Nolo Contendere" group, had the biggest number with around a dozen of them traveling in for the ceremony. Tied up at the same pier with the TRUMAN was the USS MESA VERDE (LPD-19) and USS BARRY—the first command of the CNO, Admiral Gary Roughead ’73 who did not let this fact escape those in attendance. (Too bad the LPD-19 was not around for our Youngster Cruise - it would have been a step up in the right direction.) One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of the Distinguished Public Service Award to Darlene Greenert. The CNO acknowledged the tireless efforts of Darlene that she during her time with Jon and wanted to publicly present this award to her. Jon and Darlene put on a great show for all that day and he spent a lot of time with classmates, friends, and guests thanking them for making his day special. With the help of those sitting around me, I was able to produce of list of classmates in attendance. I apologize upfront for omitting anyone from the list. In addition to the 14th company members previously mentioned, Flower Children in attendance included Steve Stanley, Jay Donnelly, Steve Howse, Randy Avers, Dave Gray, Steve Hubbard, Mark Klett, Carl Klee, Rick Udicious, Mike Hughes, Bill McGloon, Aaron Johnson, Rick Schwarting, Tom Schievelbein, Jack Doherty, George Mayer, Tom Dlugolecki, and myself. This was a special day and all attending had a great time. Semper Fi and GO NAVY!!! JJ Photos of the event: Eatons and Harts with the Man of the Hour --- ’75 Sir! Larry |
