Dear ’mates: You guys are the greatest classmates ever! Once again you’ve made the Scribe’s job a piece of cake. All I have to do is cut and paste the great gouge y’all provide. Let’s kick it off with a Pearl Harbor Day football story from Bill Squires. “I had the distinct pleasure of hosting LGEN George Flynn, his wife Sally and his daughter Maureen at the New York Giants versus the Philadelphia Eagles game at Giants Stadium on Sunday, December 7th. George grew up in Rutherford, NJ which is right next door to East Rutherford where Giants Stadium is located. I thought it would be appropriate to have George participate in the coin toss on Pearl Harbor Day since he grew up in the area and is a leader in the United States Marine Corps. It didn't hurt that he is also a member of the great class of 1975. The picture of George with Tom Coughlin, Head Coach of the New York Giants, was taken during the national anthem just prior to the coin toss. George did a great job with the coin toss, but the Giants lost to the Eagles and then a week later lost to the Dallas Cowboys. George was on shaky ground until the Giants bounced back and beat the Carolina Panthers to clinch the number one seed in the National Football Conference playoffs. It was a fun day that neither one of us will soon forget.” <photo 75#1: “George Flynn honors America on Pearl Harbor Day at Giants Stadium”> Sam Dennis sent along a couple of shots from last July when ML and Steve Coppins visited Deb and Marty Mason out in the CA Bay Area. Sam joined the group as referee and designated driver (oh yeah!). They had a fabulous time covering everything from Monterey to the Golden Gate with many, many laughs along the way. Steve and ML are in St. Petersburg, FL where Steve works as a Project Manager for a local developer building high rise condominium communities. ML is the seminar and curriculum coordinator for a dental continuing education academy—make sure your smile is shipshape around her! Marty and Deb occupy the huge family home in Los Altos and have a beautiful beach house down at Aptos, near Santa Cruz. Marty is working as Executive VP for Business Development at GES (Global Equipment Services), his fourth start-up company. Deb keeps busy with lots of athletic activities and keeping Marty straight (a full time job). Sam’s living in Cordova, TN (Memphis) and still flying for FEDEX on the MD-11. <photo 75#2: “18th at Pebble Beach”> <photo 75#3: “Feels like January on the Severn”> According to an article in the American Metal Market Monthly, Wynn Calland’s attention to detail is key to the management of Steel Development Company (SDCO). "My military background gives me a very strong concept of organizational control," SDCO's chief administrative officer says. "I'm the guy who puts together all the agenda items for the meetings. I'm the guy who dots all the i's and crosses all the t's. And I 'm thrilled to do it. I have been doing it for 25 years. I think that is an exceptional strength I bring to round out a management team that has great expertise in a lot of different areas." Since retirement from active duty, Wynn has teamed with SDCO Chief Executive Officer John Correnti at several successful steel mill companies. Regular contributor (and class web master) Andy Howard checks in with news from Houston: “At the Houston area Army-Navy game watching affair, I ran into Rich Torgersen (8th Co) and son Ryan. Rich works for ExxonMobil Production as a technical advisor. At a Houston area "all Academies and ROTC" business networking breakfast, I met Jim Fay (23rd Co). He works for Exterran as the Product Fulfillment Manager. As I was browsing the alumni site, looking up background info, I found an "interactive" map that "pegs" the given location of alumni, sorted however you like it. I found there are ten 75ers in the area, with Henderson Lawson a little further out at Texas A&M. Who knew?” <photo 75#4: “Andy and Rich at the Houston Army-Navy party”> Keith Oldemeyer lost a year-long cancer war in December. He lived in Boise and was buried in the Idaho State Veterans’ Cemetery. Steve “Fergie” Ferguson contributes this article reporting on 35th Company’s annual excursion. It’s great to have Steve retired from several careers underway and sending terrific gouge to the column. “The ‘Pirates’ of 13/25/35 recently returned from their 3rd annual ex-CONUS “invasion,” this time establishing a beach head in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Golf, beach sports, and lounging by the infinity pool filled much of each day’s POD, although a trip to a tropical jungle mountain top for some 60-knot zip-lining broke the wonderful tranquility of this tough sked. The highlight of each day was the evening gathering of ALCON ‘round the table with our ladies—in their finest plumage—to share stories of the day’s events and to plan the morrow’s. When all was said and done, we rose each night for a chorus of “Navy Blue and Gold” in multi-part harmony, impressing and amusing the other resort guests. An annual event since 2006, this year’s trek followed back-to-back Caribbean adventures at The Body Holiday at LeSport in St. Lucia. Both venues focus heavily on spa treatments with aromatherapy emphasis—one resort’s slogan boasts, “Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.” As the possessor of a very aged, rusty hull, in need of complete overhaul, I can assure everyone that this goal was more-than-achieved! The tremendous success of these fraternal adventures has been due to the planning genius of Chuck “GQ” Geyer (leave it to a Brown Shoe when you want the party done right!). A well-deserved tip-o-the-hat to you, Chuck! In keeping with our emphasis on diversity, we were able to muster an almost even mix of Brown Shoes, Black Shoes, and Bubbleheads, the latter always leading the discussion of our buoyancy at various depths in the infinity pool. Can’t wait until next year, when it looks like the Pirates will be invading Europe—the French will never be the same again!” <photo 75#5: “The Pirates in Puerto Vallarta”> Next month we should have room to begin sharing Ken Hart’s annual 14th company update. Type to you then! --- ’75 Sir! Larry |
