Mid Term Reunion April 30 - May 4, 2003

The Class of 1955 held a Mid Term Reunion in San Diego from Wednesday, 30 April, to Sunday, 4 May.  The  Shelter Pointe Hotel & Marina was the reunion hotel.  Wednesday evening featured dinner at the ADM Baker Clubhouse.  On Thursday, the Class enjoyed a picnic at Ballast Point and an evening cocktail party there too at the Oceanview Terrace.  On Friday, the Class visited the Wild Animal Park followed by lunch at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.  That evening, '55 enjoyed a dinner cruise on San Diego Bay.  Saturday, the Class visited USS DECATUR (DDG 73) and had lunch aboard.  That evening, '55 held its reunion banquet at the Shelter Pointe Hotel & Marina.

People also participated in golf and tennis. Bill Lavallee had the low score on the links while Pat Greene more than held her own against the guys on the courts.

A lot of old acquaintances were renewed.  Those attending the reunion included Bill & Donna Ball, Vern Carlson with his fiance Nubia, Norm Channell with Elizabeth Ward, Dave & Marilyn Dunn, Ned & Lynne Floyd, Guy & Pat Grafius, Bill & Pat Greene, Lu Gregg, Paul & Phyllis Grozen, Ralph & Winnie Grutsch, John Haynes, George & Mary Ann Johnson, Dick & Lavon Jones, Tom Keifaber, Al Kozischek with Mary Ann Andersen, Bill & Betty Lavallee, George Martin (16th Co), Ed & Celina McHale, Ray Medeiros with Barbara Obinger, John & Penny Nyquist, Carl & Eileen Oates, Wally & Peggy Olsen. An additional 22 photos from Ned Floyd are on two pages (each with eleven photos). These are in order of date taken. It is necessary to put these on separate pages to speed loading of your browser, and this also offers you the choice of viewing fewer than 22 at one time.
Any classmate that wants any of the full resolution, uncompressed JPG files for printing may contact Ned Floyd directly for them. Lots of other pictures were taken by Gary Snyder, Fred Tolleson and Barbara Obinger.  Anyone having pictures they wish to be posted on these pages may submit them to your webmaster. "Ned and Lynne Floyd once again gave us a great week of activities here in the golden west.  Thank you Ned and Lynne!!!" The quote borrowed from Jack tallman.

I want to thank Ned for the great job of compiling these digital images and sending them descriptions in a format that makes it easy to post to Web pages. In particular, Ned sent the images as they come from the camera. That is they are large and uncompressed. To optimize these for the Web, it was necessary to crop a little and resize to about one half the original width. Also, to make the file size smaller the images were compressed to 50 percent quality, which reduces the file size about 90 percent. For more on this read the note at the bottom of this page.

From Gary Snyder - 20 photos are on two pages (each with ten photos). These are in order of date taken. It is necessary to put these on separate pages to speed loading of your browser, and this also offers you the choice of viewing fewer than 20 at one time.

Note:
In authoring Web pages that have photos, your webmaster has a lot of room for resizing digital images both in dimension and file size. The goal is to preserve the quality of detail (usually seen in facial features) while minimizing file size for fast loading of pages. This is particularly important when there are many large photos on a single page. Quality is better at the larger image dimensions.

The tools available are cropping, resizing and file compression. The latter results in some loss of quality but this is not noticable at 50% which is what was used. Cropping allows for less overall reduction in percentage width. In these particular photos, the original width was about 1500 to 1600 pixels and I took all these down to 750 pixels width to best fit most browsers on monitors set for 800x600 resolution with the browser opened to a full window. This avoids a horizontal scroll bar. Today most users set resolution to 1024x768 so the picture size is not optimized for that setting except for the very first photo of the entire group. That image is sized for 1000 pixel width because of the number of classmates and spouses (friends) in the photo.

So, don't hesitate to ask for the original image files if you want to print higher quality or just see what they were like before editing. Just ask by file name. - number is sufficient - like 946. Web photos are inherently less suited for printing, though I rarely have seen the difference.
