USS Mustin (DDG-89) Commissioning

The following is just a smattering of information on this website about the USS MUSTIN and the Mustin Family. Visit the
"50 Years Later" page to find additional information about this subject of which all classmates have reason to be proud.

In an e-mail to the class listserve on May 15, 2003 John Nyquist wrote,
For the information of all hands, the reason you are getting invitations to the
commissioning of the USS MUSTIN (DDG-89) is that the ship is named for
members of the Mustin family including CAPT Henry C. Mustin, Class of 1896,
who flew the first aircraft ever catapulted from a ship; VADM Lloyd Mustin, Class
of 1932, who took part in developing the Navy's first lead computing AA gun sight
and served in the cruiser ATLANTA (CL-51) during the battle of Guadalcanal in
which his ship was lost; VADM Hank Mustin, our classmate; and his brother,
LCDR Tom Mustin, class of 1962, both of whom are Vietnam veterans who had
their own distinguished careers. USS MUSTIN is the thirty-ninth ship of the
ARLEIGH BURKE class Aegis guided missile destroyer, a backbone of our fleet.
The ship will be commissioned in a twilight ceremony at the North Island Naval Air
Station in Coronado on Saturday, 26 July of this year. The Commissioning Committee,
supported by the San Diego Council of the Navy League, is headed by our classmate
Hugh Webster. Yours truly is the Invitation Chairman. We made the decision to send
an invitation to the commissioning to every classmate to commemorate a major Navy
event that honors one of our classmates along with other members of the Mustin
family who have recorded an illustrious tradition of naval service. We hope anyone
who can, will come; otherwise, you'll have a keepsake of a memorable event.

All the best to all and hope to see you at the commissioning!
John Nyquist (Fighting 16)
