Thirty Years of Women at USNA  2007

Captain Evan Day, USMC, Class of 2000 began this dinner event by giving a moving tribute to the life of Major Megan McClung, USMC, Class of 1995, the first woman graduate to make the ultimate sacrifice in combat.  Megan’s parents, Michael and Re McClung, attended the dinner and provided an inspiring display of Megan’s memorabilia to highlight her tribute.  Michael and Re McClung have been made honored Associate Members of our Chapter.

Captain Earle Smith, USN (Ret.), Class of 1957, relayed his experiences as the academic advisor preparing for the induction of the Class of 1980, the first class to integrate women into the Brigade.

Admiral Thomas B. Hayward, USN (Ret.), former Chief of Naval Operations, Graduation Speaker for the Class of 1980, USNA Distinguished Graduate designee, and honored member of our Chapter from the Class of 1948, offered his recollections of that period in Naval Academy history.  Admiral Hayward also gave a vivid and well received description of carrier operations at sea as the Greatest Show on Earth.

Captain Wendy Lawrence, USN (Ret.), Astronaut, distinguished Aviator, and new Chapter Member from the Class of 1981 spoke about her years at USNA and narrated a video of her experience aboard the STS-114, the return-to-space mission following the Columbia accident.
