BG (Ret.) Wilma Vaught,
Women’s Memorial President, will kick off our event by sharing her
thoughts on leadership and professional development in the military.
5:30-7:00 PM, Iraq/Afghanistan Panel Discussion.
This is an opportunity to
hear leadership lessons learned in war by members recently returned from
duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. Air Force: Major Nicole Blatt
(Communications), Army: Col Chris Gayagas (Worked with Iraqi Security
Forces as Logistics Cdr), Capt Kate
Guttormsen
(Eng Company Commander in Ramadi, outside Baghdad), Dawn Halfaker (Army
Security Police-earned a Purple Heart)

Susan Feland, AcademyWomen
founder and president, gives opening remarks and presents findings about
women academy graduates.
8:15–9:15 AM, Professional Seminar on Life Management for Women.
Celia Szelwach, founder of
Creative Collaborations and a West Point graduate, will conduct an
interactive seminar, providing strategies to improve daily life.
9:30 – 11:30 AM, Women in Leadership Panel.
Ms. Diane K. Morales, Former
Deputy Undersecretary of Defense and highest ranking women in DOD, in
charge of logistics during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and
logistics and materiel readiness during Operation Enduring Freedom, and
the current war Iraqi Freedom; Ms. Sandy Schubert Brock, President of
SMD, a consulting firm specializing in space management, event
consulting, and fundraising; Ms. Barbara Barrett, held the number two
post at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and argued
successfully for a change in the law to allow women to fly fighters and
bombers. She ran for governor of Arizona, serves on several boards and
was interim president and CEO of the American Management Association, a
New York-based $300 million worldwide organization. These women all
share their insights on women and leadership, with time for Q&A.

Brigadier General Dana Born
is the first woman Dean of the Faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
She commands a 700-member staff and overseas more than 500 undergraduate
courses for 4,000 cadets in 32 academic disciplines. She also directs
five support staff agencies and faculty resources involving more than
$250 million. General Born graduated with distinction from the U.S. Air
Force Academy in 1983 with a degree in behavioral sciences and has her
Doctor of Philosophy degree in industrial and organizational psychology
from Pennsylvania State University. She will share her insights
regarding women at the Academies and leadership issues in the 21st
century. Lunch will be held prior to the presentation.
2:30 – 3:30 PM, Breaking Barriers in Non-Traditional Fields.
Dr. Mary Cummings, USNA Class
of 1988, one of the first female Naval fighter pilots and MIT Professor
speaks about women’s struggle, progress and success in non-traditional
fields.
3:45 – 5:15 PM, Work-Life Balance Panel Discussion.
Successful academy women from
the military and civilian sector share their secrets of their success
and how they effectively balance a career and personal life. LtCol
Deirdre Dixon (3 kids, 22 years in Army), LtCol Summer Bartczak (3
daughters and married-husband regularly deployed, Air Force, AFIT
Professor, PhD), Captain Pat Cole (Single, Navy, Special Assistant to
the Chief of Naval Operations for Diversity), Captain Sheila Patterson
(3 kids, Navy, Acquisitions Program Manager).
5:15 – 6:00 PM, Cocktails.
6:00 – 9:00 PM, AcademyWomen Cocktails and Dinner with LTG Claudia
Kennedy.
Prominent
speaker, Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Claudia J. Kennedy, is the
first and only woman to achieve the rank of three-star general in the
United States Army, taking her from the Women’s Army Corps in the late
1960s to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Army Intelligence in
1997-2000. She oversaw policies and operations affecting 45,000 people
stationed worldwide with a budget of nearly $1 billion. Since completing
her Army career, Kennedy works to help children by chairing First Star,
a non-profit corporation, has appeared as a military consultant for NBC
and CNN and as a guest on Larry King Live and ABC’s Good Morning
America. Kennedy has received several awards, including being named to
the lists of “Best Women Role Models,” “Most Influential” and “100 Most
Important Women.” She has been honored by numerous organizations for her
leadership and lifetime achievements.
LTG Kennedy
will give her perspectives on women in leadership following a gourmet
dinner and cocktails. Members are invited to bring spouses and guests
for a delicious sit down dinner. Business Casual Attire.
Second Annual AcademyWomen Symposium
Register before August 20, 2005 to receive the Early Registration
Fee!
(Please register before September 15, 2005 to guarantee adequate
seating and facilities)
Cost:
The Early Registration Fee (before August 20, 2005) is only $125.
After August 20th, total Symposium cost and Saturday evening dinner (not
including a guest) is $150. To bring a guest to the sit down evening
gourmet dinner only costs an additional $65. We encourage you to invite
your spouse or a guest to join you for dinner Saturday night!
All profits from
registration go towards funding attendance of cadets, midshipmen and
2005 graduates. The cost for cadets and midshipmen is $25. The cost
for 2005 graduates is $50. Every person that registers for the
symposium receives one year free membership to AcademyWomen.

Reservations: Reservations and payment
must be made either online or by mail before September 15, 2005.
In order to assure adequate
seating and facilities, you make reservations either at the website,
www.academywomen.org or by mail. To register by mail, complete the
attached reservation form and mail it with the payment to the listed
address. Tickets will not be mailed to you in advance. Check-in will
be at the door Friday and Saturday.
