John Wood '00
LCDR John Woods originally from Lavallette, NJ graduated
from the US Naval Academy in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Oceanography.
His first assignment was to USS Cleveland (LPD-7) where he served as Electrical
Division Officer, and earned his Surface Warfare Officer qualification. During
this time, he deployed 2 times to the Arabian Gulf in support of the Global War
on Terrorism.
Reporting to the Naval Postgraduate School in March 2003, LCDR Woods completed
his Master of Science degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography in 2005.
In September, 2005 he reported to the National/Naval Ice Center in Suitland, Maryland serving as the Science Department Head. Shortly after reporting, in February of 2006, LCDR Woods was sent on a six month Individual Augmentee (IA) assignment to the Pentagon in the Office for the Administrative Review of the Detention of Enemy Combatants (OARDEC) as an Intelligence Coordination Officer in support of detainee hearings at Guantanamo Bay. He returned back to the National Ice Center and served his final four months as Acting Executive Officer.
In July 2008, LCDR Woods assumed his current position as an Instructor in the
Oceanography Department at the United States Naval Academy. He teaches
Introductory Oceanography and Meteorology courses, as well as classes in Polar
Science and Near shore Oceanography. He also serves as the Officer
Representative for the Sprint Football Team, Women’s Club Golf Team, and
Oceanography Club.
Personal awards include the Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal,
Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various unit and service awards.
He is married to Anne Woods of Bay Head, NJ and has 2 sons and 1 daughter.
